Yep, it's a common scam.
It's not the worst scam out there.
There's one involving subjects I'm pretty sure are forbidden topics out there too that is even worse.

Just like the IRS will never call you on the phone to tell you that you owe them back taxes, a legitimate provider will never ask for prepaid card numbers over the phone.
