Safe Area To Stay in Kansas City, MO??

So I am planning on visiting Kansas City within the next week and I've already been informed to stay on the Missouri side of town. I was wondering what some good areas are to stay in?? What areas to avoid... Also is downtown Kansas City Missouri or Kansas? Please any information will be appreciated!!

Lacy dt kc is Missouri but the best place to stay for both mo and ks visitors would be Country Club Plaza area! Great shopping restaurants sites to see and great upscale places to stay! Hope u have a great stay hope to meet ya
