Why do democrats wnat to shut down the govt.?

You got played. Democrats are on record how bad it is to shutdown the govt. and now there is a clean CR.

Why won't they vote for the clean CR but would for the one that gave themselves a 40% raise, exempted them from Obamacare, and shielded their electronic communications from legal subpoena?

It has mostly to do with the debt ceiling. The CR suspends the debt ceiling for the next two years. If the democrats give that up they lose a great bit of leverage when dealing with the new majority .

It is not yet clear if the proposal that House Republican leaders plan to offer would have the votes to pass in the House or the Democratic-led Senate. (The debt limit is suspended until Jan. 1.)
