From Reagan's speech the same day:

"The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God."

Both crews are as COG said "Heroes!"

Still, good stuff from both.

The real truth is that, on the way down, they collided with a "chem trail" created by the Department of Defense. It disintegrated their shuttle.

Just asking Loving Kayla. COG and SEE3772 will back her up.
I can't remember which Astronaut said it, but I had heard the statement that NASA belived that every Shuttle Mission had a 1-75 chance of having a castastophic event that would result in the loss of the vehicle and the deaths of the crew.

Regardless whether they were a mission specialist, or a trained fighter pilot, the people that went up in that thing had a certain confidence, and courage, that does define the word hero.
