The Republicans lost because:

1. Romney is a goose. Stiff, unlikeable, rich, and not likely to click with moderates and independents. HIs ground game was shit, his own party didn't like him very much and he was a flip-flopping machine that didn't excite the party faithful. He used to support abortion and banned assault rifles in Massachussetts for god's sake! This is a GOP candidate? You've forgotten your core culture wars values. The irony.

2. The GOP primaries were a slow-motion train wreck, with different loonies attaining front-runner status every 30 to 45 days. Moderates and independents are not going to be drawn to, or feel any connection with, a party that is advocating that Donald Trump, Michelle Bachmann or Rick Perry should be President of the United States. Do you not get that? 2016 should be even better for the Democrats in this regard.

3. Why on earth would blacks, hispanics, women or young people even consider voting for a republican? The face and leadership of the GOP is rich, white grumpy old men. Very little that the GOP advocates has appeal to minority voters.
