I would take time to note that if you read into the issue, BP acted on their own by taking down the section and listing the CENSORSHIP banners. If in fact the action was taken by the government, there would be different notations and a claim of action by one of the federal agencies responsible. BP is seeking attention from the world by calling it censorship.

I really wish those saying "well I don't use it so no big deal lol!" Would take a moment and look outside their own worldview. If the site actually goes down, this is going to push a lot of sex workers into working the streets and into other dangerous situations. This decision is literally going to cause the death of some very unfortunate sex workers. So maybe stop being so selfish and think about how this will affect not just yourself.

Backpage is (or was) the streets... There was one period in the last few years where it was kind of ok. That was when they charged a fee for ads. It wasn't t a lot but it kept the serial ad posters from posting every 5 minutes to try to keep their lame ass ad up toward the top

No, backpage is not the streets. To say that is just silly.

And yes, Gemma #2, forcing women to work the streets where they are more likely to encounter dangerous situations, removing the number one (and sometimes only! Depending on where you live) advertising avenue will cause some sex workers to go under. Some will go hungry (and in turn so will their families and children), without medication, possibly get evicted if they cannot pay their rent or mortgages, unable to afford tuition, etc. If you can't see how this affects survival sex workers then you're either incredibly privileged or just dense.

If Backpage was an escort's only way of making money, I truly feel sorry for her. There's plenty of other sites to advertise on that are way more safe than using Backpage. If a woman was really about making ends meet, she would look into those other options.
