Center-right guy here. I never thought the virus was a hoax, and even supported Abbott when he shut things down. I was concerned when he was among the first to open back up, but more along the lines of “I hope this isn’t a disaster” than having any certainty about it being the incorrect move.

I am glad the China lab escape angle is being investigated, because I don’t trust those fuckers. I suspect we will never know the truth, but we at least should try.

Oh, and I got vaccinated, too, as soon as it became apparent that the early adopters weren’t turning into zombies or something.

I hardly consider myself hard right, hey I was born and raised in the SF Bay Area are grew up (without really having a choice) as a liberal. I am still very liberal where it comes to freedom of choice, religion, and a whole host of other issues.

That said, I have never and am still not particularly worried about COVID personally. I believe people getting off their fat lazy asses, dropping some weight, getting some sun, will have just as much to do with them being able to survive COVID than anything else, including the vaccine, which I do hope everyone (but me) gets very soon.

I don't recall anyone ever saying the virus was a hoax. At least not anyone with credibility, and possibly discounting a few people that were completely wacko. Perhaps my memory is faulty and someone can remind us if they have specifics.

I do recall early on that it was being compared to the seasonal flu. But if you recall, the early case numbers were small and data was scarce, so it made sense to make such a tentative comparison then and also made sense that the conclusions would change as we got more data. It's not even clear now (to me at least) just how accurate the most recent data we have is, but it's certainly much better than we had initially.

I didn't buy the lab leak theory at first for one simple reason: I looked at a map. People were saying nonsense things like there was a lab just a couple of blocks from the "wet market". Well that's just wrong. The Wuhan Institute of Virology is 7 miles away from the Huanan Seafood Market (now closed) and on opposite sides of the Yangtze river. Also, neither one is close to Wuhan Central Hospital where Dr. Li Wenliang worked, who got in trouble with the police for trying to alert his colleagues to this strange new type of pneumonia that he was seeing show up and who later died from the disease. All of these places are searchable on Google Maps and in just a few minutes you can verify this. On top of all this, I'm familiar with the city and was actually in Wuhan in November of 2019, and I can tell you that everything appeared completely business as usual.

The thing that changed my mind was the fact that we started seeing a large number of cases that are asymptomatic which could mean the virus was spreading all around the city unnoticed at first. That could have had time to connect the widely separated places I mentioned. A little bit scary for me since I was there about that time, but apparently escaped unharmed. Also, a few other facts have come out more recently that seem to lend credibility to this theory, and there have been some peer-reviewed papers in highly-respected journals that also add credibility. I'm sure the Lab has cleaned up its records since then so we may never know for sure, but I think a decent analysis should be able to come to a pretty solid conclusion.

One other loose end. Whether it was a virus altered by human intervention or just a natural virus they were studying, I really don't know. Qualified people have reported both opinions, so I think the jury is still out on that one. However, interesting fact that was reported recently: did you know that Influenza rarely infects Chinese people? I can confirm that friends in China previously told me that Flu is not a big problem there. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that they were attempting to engineer something similar that wouldn't affect the Chinese population and would be even more severe for other ethnicities. Of course that's just speculation at this point, but if true it would seem that they failed or at least partially failed. This time.
