Steelers 2024 thread

Nothing about last night's game was the fault of coaching. Nothing. Last night's loss was entirely on the players. I know Tomlin will get the blame, but he had nothing to do with that loss.

Exactly. The players let Tomlin down. Nothing he could do, as a coach, to fix that shitshow last night Originally Posted by tommy156

In today’s NFL that is a terrible game plan!

Going for it on your own 35 with 45 seconds to go in the half?!? Risking that to hopefully get a field goal??

I will agree our team, for the most part, showed all of their warts, including and especially Wilson, so why not put together a package of plays for Fields? Wanna bet Tomlin/Smith don’t even have a sequence of plays yet for Fields? You’ll lose that bet.

I see a lot of good football players playing worse now than earlier in the year. A Tomlin team trademark.

Calvin Austin fumbling the punt return? Not a coaching problem.

Pickens dropping 3 balls? Not a coaching problem.

The players have to execute the game plan. We don't know how many times they would have thrown the ball, if they had just executed better.

Noone is mentioning how. Badly the oline played. The left side was horrible . Washington and moore almost got wilson put into a coma

U can. Blame wilson all u want but being surrounded everytime he dropped back and all the dropped passes cant be blamed on him

Ben had similar issues toward the end of his career. As soon as he finished dropping back, people were already in his face. A QB can only accomplish so much under those circumstances, especially one that's not particularly mobile.
I think it's time to admit that Freiermuth is average at best, too. So many clutch drops and fumbles throughout his career. Too quick to celebrate routine plays, as well.

He's no Heath Miller, that's for sure.

I can't believe the Tomlin apologists. Almost everything in this organization has been changed, the GM, coaches, players, even scouts but you keep getting the same results. What's the lone constant? Tomlin. He sets the tone and direction of the team.

I've seen this story too many times, barely make the playoffs (6th seed) and get blown out in the first round. That's what is coming in Baltimore.

But hey, he didn't have a losing season.

we havent had a great DC since labeau and OC? hailey was good but rooney insisted on that hiring, they ran ariens out of town

tomlin struck gold when he brought in flores but my guess is he never would turn over the defense to him even if he stayed. look at what he has done with the vikings defense in one year.

the steelers need to bring in more of the old zone blitz rather than rely on the two edge rushers constantly. at least move watt around more

Now we are slightly above average and the Tomlin apologist think that should be good enough. That acceptance disgusts me.

The last time we had this kind of playoff lack of success we changed coaches. Why is this different?????

I realize this is a pipe dream - as Tomlin would never stay on in a demoted capacity - but he's an excellent coach. Just maybe HC isn't his best fit (like LeBeau in Cincinnati).

... But what CAN be blamed on Tomlin is NO PLAY-OFF WINS
in the last 7 (SEVEN) maybe soon to be 8 (EIGHT) years. ...

And onley 2 (TWO) seasons with play-off wins in the last 14
(FOURTEEN) seasons. ... That's HORRID - by "Hall of Fame" standards.

... Sad but TRUE, mates...

Idiocracy, Mediocrity, that is the last decade in two words.

I heard somewhere a few times - Tomlin has never had a losing season. Gee that’s great isn’t it? He must be a terrific coach. Well, actually that isn’t so great. That actually IS the problem with the Steelers as a franchise. They had a great team throughout the 90s, other than one thing - a franchise QB. They had Bubby, ODonnell, Kordell, Tomczak, and Maddox - none of whom could get it done. Once they finally had a rate losing season (I believe 6-10 IIRC) they were in a position to pick the franchise QB and proceeded to win 2 Super Bowls as a result.

They actually NEED another crappy season like that. No, I don’t want to see them go 5-12 or something like that, but that would be what is best in the long run. They actually had a chance to do that a few years back when Ben was out for the year, but they traded their first rounder for a safety who was great that year, and they went 8-8 as a result. Had they kept that first rounder and tanked down to 5-11 or so, they might have gotten a Justin Herbert or similar QB. Of course, knowing the “Steeler Way” they probably would have taken a LB instead.

Even more today, the QB is of paramount importance. You can beat bad and mediocre teams by running the ball and playing good defense, but it takes an explosive offense with a good passing game to beat good teams. The Steelers certainly don’t have that, and they rarely beat the really good teams (as evidenced by the recent losing streak and the lack of playoff wins over the past 7 seasons). Heck, they SAY that they want to focus on the running game, but they can’t even do that effectively. If they are do great at running, why could they not gain a half yard in three plays against a poor defense? Why are they among the lowest ranked teams in yards per carry?

They need a philosophy change. The way they play isn’t working. Tomlin doesn’t seem likely to embrace or implement such a change. He is not a bad coach (he isn’t an elite coach either), but it is time for a change. Unfortunately, that isn’t the “Steeler Way” and he will likely remain on the job until he decides to quit.
