Now I agree Trump way overdid cuts to Harvard and some other institutions. But these rankings have nothing to do with that. The data predates Trump's second term.

You go back to the early 2000's and top ten rankings based on scientific output included seven American universities.

There was a good article in the Financial Times this weekend, about China's educational system. It was written by a Chinese university graduate who was in the "genius system." Every year about 100,000 talented Chinese students are chosen to take "competition" classes. They automatically are granted entrance to the best universities, and don't have to take the intensely competitive gaokao college admissions exams during their final year of high school.

These geniuses kick ass in science and math Olympiads, which formerly were dominated by U.S. and Russian students. Chinese students won 22 of 23 gold medals in the last competition.

More importantly, they're founding and working for very successful companies. They're China's ace in the hole in the race for AI domination.

The article says China now graduates 10 people in science, engineering and math, for very graduate in the USA.

The USA is foolish IMO cutting back on Chinese university students, or at least the really bright ones. We're going to need all the help we can get. A lot of the genius students used to go to U.S. universities. I'm not sure that's still the case.

I work in Engineering for one of the largest companies in the world. We have engineering, design, and manufacturing facilities in both the US and China.

The change in the past 20 years is incredible. 20 years ago, our Chinese people were inexperienced and uncertain, with poor English skills. Now? They are highly competent, creative as fuck, and almost all speak English with a high degree of fluency.

They are young and aggressive.

They fucking GET it.

And we are fucking LOSING it.

Interesting Rooster, thanks. The FT article says that taking and presumably passing an English test, which is preceded by three years of intense study, is mandatory for college bound students.

I've ridden in several upper-end Chinese made vehicles. They're nice, and in the country where I was a lot cheaper than the competition. USA/Mexico/Canada theoretically should be able to compete. But the agenda of Trump and certain Democrats have made it where they can't, IMO, unless they hide behind tariff barriers. A topic for another thread I guess.

Hi Captain, The bigger issue is that American parents, teachers and school boards don't push the students hard enough. In my rural high school, football and other sports were #1 and academics were number 2.

As to universities I largely agree. Yesterday I would have said that liberal arts curricula push political ideology and replace courses that help people do well in the real world. I figured I better have a little back up as RX792P or Rooster might call me out on that. ChatGPT says social sciences and history now account for only about 7.2% of bachelor's degrees, down from 15.8% in 2013. So scratch that theory. More students are studying business, engineering and medical-related fields, and that's a good thing.
