Breaks My Heart

Vito,

Some people have a dark sense of humor, but this one isn't a joking matter. I don't care who you are, to make a joke of this situation makes people think you have no compassion towards the hardships of others.

I just saw a story of how people who were looking down on a what happened in their area and they noticed how a car was moving around a little. This was 20 hours after everything happened and after they got a closer look, there were three elderly people in that car who had been trapped. They got them out and they were OK. Thank God.

Now they're bracing for another tsunami? God help them. Originally Posted by MsElena

As for the Japan vs Hitler thingie; Hitler was elected in a democratic election, the people of Japan did not vote for Hirohito. So you can say that the Japanese people did not support Hitler but their unelected leadership did. Does that let the Japanese people off the hook karma wise?
Vito,

Oh I know you weren't making a joke. I knew what you were saying. I was just "expanding" on it?

JG,

Karma had nothing to do with it. But, you know that.

In case anyone needs a dose of reality concerning this:

Is it still a joke now?
Not so fast. The one thing that we can compare apples-to-apples is the body count. In that regard, the destruction from the 9.0 earthquake that hit Japan is WORSE. Estimates put it at two to three times the number of people killed on 9/11.

Obviously, one is a natural disaster and one is an attack. Obviously. But to the people of Japan I doubt it matters how their loved ones died as much as if they died. Put another way, would you rather trade the body count of 9/11 for Japan's death toll? Would you feel better if 9,000 Americans died on 9/11 due to an earthquake instead of ~3000 due to a terrorist attack? What if one of those additional 6000 was one of your loved ones? ......................... its just stupid to compare the two events. yes the loss of love ones are a tragedy but thats as close as the two will get to comparision.

I particulary like "misantropy" for what it's worth, Lilianna like your sense humor. Although a little twisted, maybe that's why I like it lol.
Longermonger, I have always enjoyed your hobby posts...but there is no apples to apples comparison here. And by NO means am I being disrecpectful to the events of 9/11.

But this horrible event in Japan in terms of deaths, lost of property, and just plain sadness and tragedy is in a class of its own. And even today the count of innocent lives continues to rise. Seems like they have the nuclear reactors under control, but as shock waves continue who knows?

As far as your question regarding would anyone "feel better if 9k Americans die from earthquake vs 3k of a terrorist attack...sorry WHAT A STUPID QUESTION!!!!...AS WELL AS THE FOLLOW UP QUESTION!

There is NO feeling better about any of those situations. And of course it would not matter if 10 people or 10,000 were killed...if any of them were a loved one I would be devastated regardless of the situation....as I am sure the rest of us would!!!!

And I know I'm being pickie about this (thru my old business I spent alot of time in Japan, and came to respect the Japanese)....but why in this thread are people going on about WWII and BLA, BLA, BLA about what they did (or claim to have) read?

This is supposed to impress anyone here?????

Sorry if I come off as an ass, in general this is such a sad story, and my time in Japan and the friendships developed with the Japanese is a touchy subject right now.

And no one loves dark humor more than I do...and there are plenty of threads on this site that I think it adds to. But is this on of those threads???

Call me an ass, but I just don't see it being appropriate here!!!!

OK folks have at me.

I would just like to say that gallows humor in the face of tragedy is acceptable. It is a way for people to deal with the horror of disaster. If you don't like gallows or black humor in the time of tragedy that is your right. But it is a legitimate way of handling a horrible situation. It does not diminish the loss, or demean the suffering. To make this big a deal out of a one liner is ridiculous.
I do believe you have to know your audience though. Some folks are very sensitive. And you do risk getting your head bitten off.
I would like to know how many people in this thread have sent in aid?
Hey Bartman, I hear ya. And yes gallows humor can/does play a part in the healing process as well. And really my main point in my post was answering a question, which really did NOT deal with the humor issue.

And of course, nothing said in this thread will have any impact to those in Japan. My intention certainly was not to have anyone's "head bitten off". Or make a Capital Case out of the humor...just rendering an opinion.

But let me ask you a quesion. Since 9/11 was brought up before any of my posts.
In the couple of days RIGHT after 9/11 did you hear any gallow's humor? And if so, how was it accepted? Not trying to make a right or wrong arguement, just wondering.

As far as SillyGirl's post, I'll take it at face value and not read anything more into it.

I have, as I am sure many other hobbists have...I luv someone's suggestion about allocating a portion of this month's hobby $$$'s as aid.

I sent my to C.A.R.E.....so now, since you initially brought up the question, how about you?
The only charity that I support with my money that is NOT used for US citizens is Operation Smile.
Hey SillyGirl, not familiar with that one, but where do I sign up, lol
They fix cleft palates/lips for children in 3rd world countries. OperationSmile.org.
Very cool!
