Giving it up for Lent

You're not supposed to "give anything up for lent" you're supposed to fast during the day and only eat at night and no meat on friday.
One side of my family is Catholic and the other is Protestant. If I'm anything I say I'm Buddhist but I still observe a few things, like Lent. (Yes, I was confirmed etc.) I am giving up sleeping in for lent and am using the extra hours for meditation and doing some volunteer work. I can get in a couple of hours each day and I'm feeling good about it so far.

It's hard to pass up good fried chicken, Tara. If you can do it, you're stronger than I am!
I would never give up anything for a superstition.
I guess we should believe in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus too!
it's a little bit old of a thread, but it's not 30 days, .... not sure why Reeltalk was given a hard time about this. I don't think he is being hypocritical, I think he is looking for ways to motivate himself to give up the hobby and since it takes something like 21 days or so to break a habit, then more power to him if this way works.
until i was about 13 or 14, my mom took us to catholic church. was baptized, had 1st communion, and was confirmed [whatever that meant]. it just never resonated in me.

so, the idea of giving up something for 42 days during lent just seem hypocritical to me. "hmmm, if i just give this up until easter, i can continue w/ it afterwards."

why not just give it up all together? or replace it with something more positive??

i just dont see the sense in giving up something for just a short time frame and then backsliding into it.

guess i'd rather do what i do all year round. Originally Posted by pmdelites

The idea is to give up something that is a good, that has value in your life. It's a sacrifice, not rehab.

Not that it isn't used that way... I dont think giving up "addictions" is a good idea.. I've tried a few times to use lent as a reason to quit smoking, I never made it
