Actually the four women murdered out on Long Island is getting focus. They are terming it as a serial killer. But the media seems to identifying that they were sex workers (hey sex sells no matter what), but the reports are more about finding the killer than what these women did outside of the fact the killer prays on these professionals. It is so sad.

That's why I will phrase it as SW or courtesan (or temporary date ). There is a thread (or two) discussing the semantics of the gentlemen and ladies on here (I like those nouns to describe us!).
