I honestly don't know much about this individual, but if I had to guess i would say he is not trying to be a "dick", it just comes naturally to him. I wouldn't call him a "dick" , it seems to me he is more of an asshole/smart ass or a cheeky bastard. Meh, may be all of the above just to be sure.
