You don't have to stay at this hotel to experience the historical charm of it: it was at the Menger in San Antonio where Teddy Roosevelt enlisted his Rough Riders that eventually captured San Juan Hill. The bar on which he stood to enlist them is still in the hotel. It's been a while since I've stayed there, and has been renovated since then.
