Lauren, your first name - Fiona Apple brings back some old memories of wandering into a bar where she was singing - she was completely unknown and it was amazing. She was too young to be off the stage in the bar because they served alcohol...!

Sisyphus - an excellent list! Glad to see Warren Zevon and The English Beat and more.

Though clearly famous - just getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - I always like Tom Waits - much of his stuff is way off main stream.

Others: though I'm stuck in the 80's...

Being a huge fan of music, I have long ago stopped listening to radio, watching MTV or paying attention to the grammies. It has become great fun to search for artists of underground fame or ones that are talented and no one has ever heard of (hence frequent trips to NOLA)

In that same vein, if you like Fishbone, try The Greyboy Allstars, DJ Greyboy and Liquid Soul. They're more acid jazz to Fishbone's metal jazz, but they've all worked great in playlists with them. I suppose it depends on what you like about Fishbone -- is it the jazzy riffs or the hard sound?

Lately, I've been listening to Bon Iver, The Fleetfoxes, Grizzly Bear, Sun Kil Moon, and Iron & Wine. All very mellow...

I actually used to like them, when compared against the backdrop of radio they aren't bad. However when compared against the 1000's of songs on my iPhone, everytime they come on I cringe at how poorly contrived they are and eventually deleted them off my music libraries and threw out their CDs.

I'm a musician and love music -- I could list thousands of pieces of music I like common, obscure, modern, old, etc. But I think these stand out as being not very widely known, and worth a listen.

For soothing piano music, I like Danny Wright.

I discovered him while traveling in the Northwest about 15 years ago.
