As promised: Slavery good or bad?

The major problem with that bogus little theory, zany, is that every major society in the 15th and 16th centuries utilized slave labor; including those in Africa. So, zany, how can less than 2% of the African slave trade coming to what would become these United States give these United States a leg-up on any and every other society of that period utilizing slave labor? I've always thought that slavery held back the country greatly. A small number of white Southerners profited, but nearly everyone else suffered from it.

Black suffering was obvious. But most white Southerns had greatly reduced economic prospects - how do you compete with subsistence labor?

The South mired itself in a relatively poor agrarian economy with the rest of the country became much more industrialized and, therefore, wealthier.

I think the county would have been far wealthier in 186o if slavery had not existed and would have been MUCH MUCH wealthier in 1865 without the devastation of the Civil War.

Slavery was the opposite of "the greatest good for the greatest number". It provided concentrated benefits for a small class of landowners and damaged the entire rest of the economy around them.
