Good luck at the inspection station telling them about some phone conversation you had. They want to see your insurance card which will have the year model of the vehicle on it from the registration. If it's not 25 years old or older (1991 model or older) than you're SOL.

The insurance card has the year of the vehicle. Cars have the month and year of production stamped on a plate, usually found on the driver's side door jam.

Yes I know that but the inspection shop will want the insurance card. That's what they go by for model year.
