Serious question to you scholarly types..Why does Jesus always appear more angol-saxon. Fair skin, blonde or redish hair, light eyes. Is this a common appearance for folks from Bethlehem? Seriously? was this common, was he like a Brad Pitt of Jews, or do we really have no clue what Jesus really looked liked and we buy the myth created by a bunch of white dudes?

The people who owned the theaters and who commissioned the art were anglo saxon so they wanted Jesus to look like them. The reality is no one "knows" what he looked like, nor do they know what moses, Mohammed, David or anyone from biblical history. I think that today people look at Jesus not for how he is physically portrayed but for what he represents. Oh sure your going to have a few pop a gasket when he pops up looking middle eastern/jewish but for the most part most people dont care because they know we have no idea what he looked like.

It actually took over 400 years to decide on what the person "Jesus" represented. I compare it to, say, 400 years from now, if a group of people decide that Charles Manson had a "divine" purpose and start a religion based on his beliefs. Then he would then be no different than Mohammed or Joseph Smith or anyone else who has a hallucination or a dream brought on by lots of chemical engineering or alcoholic consumption and decide that they have some kind of divine awakening.

Me, I'll just worship at the Cathedral of the Golden Goalposts on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Check out the fresco from a Coptic church in Cairo, possible from 300 AD. It portrays Jesus and his disciples as black. Probably closer to the truth than our Westernized vision of Him.

Jesus most likely looked like a typical Jewish person in that region at the time with darker skin, longer hair, very simple clothes. If he was to be believed as a preacher or rabbi he most likely had to be a taller than most men at that time. The people who wrote the gospels all had different oral and written sources, though Matthew and Luke had a source common between them in the "Q" source that contained all the parables relayed to them. All the gospels were written for different audiences; one for gentiles, one for Jews, etc., and stretched and conformed the story of Jesus to fit each audience. I could go on about this all, this is 12 years of Catholic theology teaching all pouring out here.

Bob Marley's dad was a white Englishman. Bob Marley (5'4") was nearly as short as Jesus (5'1" or less).
