I have had two pure breed dachsunds along with three pure breed basset hounds and I must say that one must do the regular check ups and keep the dogs weight under control. More often than not, people feed their dog scraps, etc. One of my doxies, did have to be put down because of his back, but in retrospect, we shouldn't have let him jump around, etc. He was unique because he had longer than average legs for a doxie which enabled him to jump on beds etc.

My current doxie is 13, weight under control, gets reg check ups, and I am very careful in handling him with his back, and has no health issues other than his failing eye sight and hearing. That's old age for any dog, so I don't really consider that a true health issue.

My ex took the hounds and no health issues either.

Not saying your family didn't take care of their dogs, but I have seen many times where people overfeed their dogs, neglect regular vet care, etc.

Bulldogs are cute and all but i prefer more of the wolf like breeds hybrids Siberian Huskeys,Malamutes,etc....
Boxers are a great breed, can be very full of energy and love. However, every dog is different, but there seems enough experience that I really do not need to mention that (although I just did).

I can not say enough about rescues as well, but as with anything do your homework and investigation to be sure that you are getting what you are really looking for.

If you do go full bred, I recommend looking at UKC and not AKC. AKC has been under fire for a long time about putting standards before pet safety while UKC is about health first and standards second.

One of my dogs is a German Shepherd from a breeder that has a setup in her yard, although not what I would classify as a backyard breeder. She breeds once or twice a year and the pups are all UKC registered. My GS is one of the best dogs that I have ever had, and is as healthy as can be.

I have had previous dogs that were AKC and looked beautiful and things started great. However, as they aged, problems began and things got worse. Just something to think about as you continue your search.

Best of luck!!
Thanks everyone. I agree that it is better to adopt to if you can. All of mine, except for one have been purebred rescues.

I am mostly just partial to boxers. I can't help it, I just love them! I have been to the shelter a couple of times to try to keep my mind open, but I want what I want! When I find my match, I will post a pic.
I agree with you scarlet on you want what you want... Alot of people push adoption but getting a dog is a big commitment and if your heart is set on a certain breed you may never find one at a shelter.
