I'm a fan of Descartes. If I were to extend the period to its fullest, I might choose Thomas Paine though he was more of a political activist and promoter than a genius thinker like Descartes. I have no essay nor connection to the hobby to put forth but I'll check back and try to play ball with you. I enjoy this type of thing.

You can count on me to not immediately dismiss an acceptance of religion as a denial of original thought.
I'm secretly sweet, loving, and want the best for everyone I meet. So naturally, I like Socrates as far as early philosophers.

As for how his thoughts can pertain to the hobby...

I guess the premise "all desire is for the good" would be the best fit.

Edit: Ooops. I somehow missed the word "modern".

Machiavelli is my favorite. "The Prince" was the first peice of philosophy I read outside of lectures and themes in fiction.
