Its just a sign of the times. Each generation is getting worse and worse. They don't even teach cursive writing in school now!! Plato (see Phaedrus) complained that kids were learning to read and write, and that meant they wouldn't need to memorize things. One hundred and fifty years ago, teachers complained that kids were bringing metal pen nibs to school, which meant they didn't learn how to cut a feather quill. One hundred years ago, they complained that fountain pens allowed children to write without stopping to refill their pen, which kept them from thinking about what they were saying. I can find additional examples throughout the history of education.
Kids don't learn cursive any more because it is a useless skill. It was designed to increase writing speed, especially when using a quill pen. Teaching kids cursive is the equivalent of teaching them to whittle a feather quill.
