Is Speech Suppressed on the ECCIE Boards???

SP, is there any truth to the rumor I've heard that when you hit 5,000 posts you have to sit out for 2 months? Originally Posted by pjorourke

Yeah, this make 4771. Still well behind your 6364.

[I'm not getting laid nearly as much as you, so I have a lot more time to post. Even with that, your total is sooooo much more.] Originally Posted by charlestudor2005

Clearly speech is suppressed. Some suppression is content based as spelled out in the rules such as forbidden topics. My gut tells me that there are a few topics that they owners are a tad more sensitive about that I would be, but 1) I don't know all of the details that led them to their decisions; and 2) if I owned a board, I'd probably err on the side of caution in any event.

Sometimes, moderators cut threads off before I would have done so. (Sometimes they let them go on longer than I would, too.) So the answer to the question is an unambiguous "Yes."

However, if the question has an implied term of "reasonable' added such that it reads "is speech on eccie.net unreasonably suppressed, in general I'd say "No." I can quibble a bit at the edges on discussion on STDs, but it is an issue where I can certainly see both sides of the issue. Just because I might draw the line at some place other than where the current ownership draws it doesn't mean that their decision is unreasonable.

And let's give the devil his due. Moderating a board like this isn't an easy job. Nor is it easy to keep an appropriate balance between the various competing interests that moderators have to balance.

So apart from a quibble here and there, I'd say it's extremely well run and speech is not unreasonably restricted.

And, unlike some, when I quibble, I don't always see fit to voice my displeasure. And on those rare occasions where I do disagree enough to comment, I more often than not do so privately to a mod. A practice all would do well to consider.
I`ve hardly ever met a board where people discuss topics at an intellectual level like its the case on this board. And - lately - i do think the mods are doing a great job. When i came here there was moderator change - so i have no clue what was before.

I like it here and i feel i can express myself sufficiently - which is very important to me - and lately i had the chance to clarify an important issue on this board - which i am thankful as well.

And on top of it learn a bit or two as well. Which i am thankful for without wanting to be a slimeball. I personally don`t need mods, i can handle myself, but i do think at some point they are necessary to keep an overview about happenings. Some discussions here (not on D&T i have to say) i am glad are moderated , for reasons of trolls and what not ( i remember a provider and a hobbyist smashing their heads in in a level that no one of us will ever dig to....) and closed. But these are rare happenings. Anything else - i think - is fine.
Speech is not limited if you can handle the backflash :-) and you maintain at least some sort of intellectual reasoning :-) - i think.

The real problem here isn't that speech is being squelched, it's that some people don't know when it's better to just shut up.

There's been a huge rash lately of people posting shit just for the sake of posting shit. Some people think that there's need a respond to every single post with a nasty comment rather than a reasoned, informative reply. It's one thing to drop a one-liner in every now and then when the intent is to draw a laugh. It's another thing to crap posts all over the board that have nothing but vitriol in them.

Some posters around here think it's great fun to constantly make posts that contain no information, no commentary, no attempt at humor, but are instead filled with nothing but a personal attack on some person or group. I am so damn sick of the "group X are retards" and "you must be a dumbshit for believing that" type stuff that I'm ready to bomb the damn server just to stop it.

If you don't have something to add to the discussion then don't hit the damn submit button.

Now I freely admit that I've been guilty of the same kind of stuff a couple of times myself. I've let the environment get the better of me and I've given as good as I've got. (Sorry Rud, I shouldn't have and I didn't really mean it.)

I'm making a pledge to stop that now. From this point forward I'm going to do the right thing and just let it all slide.

I am, however, going to start calling out people who are guilty of this kind of thing. We've got a great little community here. The mods can't read everything. They can't police the whole damn board. They do a great job with what they've got and they don't get a dime for it. I think we all need to start helping them out a little and start policing the place for ourselves. If we all start giving ourselves and each other some gentle reminders when the shit starts to fly maybe we can keep it from hitting the fan so often.

Just a couple of pennies from Mazo.

Cheers.
@Mazo
That deserves to be stickied.

The next thing which is particularly annoying for me is posting in threads without even reading them and having any clue. What`S that for??? Hello??? Territorial pissings?? Or letting the whole universe know that - yet again - you have no clue??? (lol) (this stuff can be found in google - nice advertising, eh??)

And the personal attacks that are unfounded ( i can relate to personal attacks that are founded and reasonable) but i have had it with sneaky one liners that contain absolutely NO information except stereotypical "you are a piece of shit" information. Explain, explain, elaborate..that is what i call educated and worthy of D&T.

And the next thing annoying for me are generalized statements which clearly show a lack of relativism or some kind of information. You got to be very wary of that. Not all people who engage in a certain attitude or habit are of the same character. Focusing and specialising on references is key. (sorry for being braggadacious, but in a D&T thread where everyone claims to be lavish and whatnot i think such things can be expected - university education or not)

But i have found my way around this. I ignore people that annoy me. ANd there are plenty of people that are interesting for me. They keep me here. And i think even if that was not the case , hell, this is a hooker board. I am here for business as well :-))

Unfortunately, many people don't understand the concept of "gentle." Or they interpret their comments (or those of an ally/friend) by a different standard than they apply to comments by others. If the reminder is vitriolic rather than gentle, as occurs from time to time, the tension and bad will may be more likely to escalate than to subside.
