Mostly Somalia and a small region of western Asia. It's not widespread but it does still occur and goes back thousands of years. It's not really clear why it's done. It could be to ensure virginity, but many anthropologists belive it's a ritual ceremonial procedure originally intended to prevent evil spirits from entering a woman.
