Real-estate Taxes on my Home

I paid my tax yesterday, at the deadline.. I was too scared to open the envelope until then, I knew the tax would increase.. it was "only" 8% higher, I was happy it wasn't 20%, as I heard many received.

Yup. I went in to argue about my inflated property taxes. They said, "The appraisal is less than the sales price." End of story. I have a second home in NM in the mountains. It's a $250K cabin and I pay $1100 a year in taxes. Here in Tarrant County, I'm appraised for $462K and pay almost $10K.

For the "Obama Economy" posting -- kiss my ass. You obviously don't have a clue how the Texas Legislature and local governments work. More importantly, you clearly don't understand the issues with overall tax rates and property/school districts. Go to the Political Forum . . .

I can tell you the protest cases hardly ever win. I sat through many of these and you better bring some good evidence to support your case.

I guess it's better than your property taxes going down which means your neighborhood Is turning into a ghetto.

A lot of the older nicer neighborhoods were built when sf prices were much lower. Some of the owners are dying off now and they are selling at twice or triple the price now and the new home owners that were looking at existing taxes and it seems like a bargain. Not realizing that the home will now be valued at much higher valuation.
As said above. You will be the evidence they use to support their value. You paid it. What happened to you is pretty routine. The appraised value will raise to the recent sales price.
I just hope nobody tells mooney that the more your property is appraised for the more property taxes you pay. It's been that way for years. And, Chung, I wish I could pay taxes by opening 1 envelope. That could cut them in half lol
Your taxes after homestead exemption is filed cannot go up more then 10% a year. That is what I was told when I went to file my exemption today. You have a certain window of time from April 1rst to file a protest. This is Tarrant and I'm sure it is similar statewide. Last year I payed full amount because I was not eligible for exemption because of some bullshit about having possession of property on Jan 1rst of that year.

Lots of people in the Metroplex have been complaining about tax increases . Especially in higher growth neighborhoods like Frisco and such. My dad was lucky he paid nothing because he was a WW2 veteran , I'm not sure if that option exist on all people with veteran status but it may be worth looking into.
You also get a slight tax break when you turn 65. Call your county tax office maybe a month after your birthday. I was told it was automatic but I would still call.

Don't think homestead would help in this case. It would still go up and then when he filed for it with this house it oils freeze the higher new rate.
