I suggest Smith and Wesson, something like a model 642, stainless steel. If you ever point the gun at anyone you intend to shoot, it will likely be very close range. It is the decision and mental preparation that you need training in, not just aiming. Anyone should be able to shoot a bad guy at 5 yards if they train a little, are mentally prepared, and have a decent weapon.

Definitely as stated here, it's the type of handgun that either absorbs the recoil or transfers it to your hand and wrist. I have a Ruger P89 9mm, kinda big and heavy frame but it is the smoothest and most enjoyable gun I have, very accurate and accuracy is everything. You don't even feel the recoil with this gun.
Then I have a Ruger LCP 9mm which stings my hand and actually hurts to shoot it a lot.
I think a small revolver is good to concealed carry because it's not going to jam and they are pretty safe to have close to your body.
What you might try are some softer padded grips on your revolver.
That may take a lot of the recoil sting out of it.

Since the question about revolver vs semiauto for qualification wasn't fully answered, here it is. Previously, if you tested with a revolver, you could only carry a revolver. But if you tested with a semiauto, you could carry any legal handgun. When that rule was passed, it was based on a semiauto bring more complex. Fortunately, that rule was eliminated.
