Online Personalities

This a good post and I've touched on this subject before. The motives to being one way on here and different in person vary from person to person. Anybody that has met me in person or spent any length of time will tell you I am the same in person as I am on the board. That goes for one on one or while in a group of people.

As for being a jerk on here and sweet in person..... That's not that hard to understand is it. If they are jerks in person then you are gonna tell them to hit the road jack and then they won't get to the promise land

Also how many true "jerks" actually tell you their board handles when you meet them. If they use other avenues for you to screen them with so that you never know their board personality then IMO they are cowards with no backbone to be who they say they are.

If they do tell you who they are then I think that says a lot about them as a person. They are who they are irregardless of what people think. That's a good thing. There is also a difference in being honest (sometimes brutally honest comes across as being a jerk) and being an ass.
well one disadvantage of this forum is you don't hear the person's tone, you can't see their body language or facial expression...I also think some use the boards to vent their own issues..there have been alot of time I have typed a reply and stopped from hitting enter just because I knew I was reacting...

Irish Vixen,

That is a good point. I'm very blunt in person. One can still be blunt without being "bitchy". On the board, I just come across very harsh and bitchy because ya really can't hear me saying any of these things. Yes I argue alot and I like to debate a lot just for the hell of it. I've even gotten into debates bcd with a client... it just made the sex better jk
In real life I'm just a smart ass and never take anything too seriously...but my on-line persona is.....oh wait a minute......

I agree, I've had that happen to me a few times. Sometimes you can't tell what a person meant or how they are coming across thru text on a screen.

However a post like this you can tell exactly their tone....

Originally posted by ******* thats stupid. that much money for that fat whore. seriously i have seen SWs that are in muchbetter shape than her.
There's no mistaking that tone. That is being an ass.....

It's a difference between playing the antagonist and just saying stuff to get peoples' goats and having a different persona.

Two factors that support the notion that a board persona tracks reality is that you can't teach smart and you can't hide dumb. Or phrased differently, you can post but you can't hide.

Another reason that the two personalities mesh is that it takes time and thought to develop a character for a PMB and it takes discipline to stay in character. At some point the real person is revealed. More importantly, few have the motivation to create an identity just for a hobby board.

But it can be done. On the old ASPD, someone, a genius of deception, created a pair of fictional hooker sisters who regaled the HDH crowd with some incredible whoppers of tales of bi-sexual lust, infidelity, marital discord, mild substance abuse and incest. It was a total fabrication although the insights and details pointed to someone with deep familiarity with the hobby. But eventually the con was discovered (too soon for me, I was all in) and the circus left town. But it took an enormous amount of thought, planning and energy to conceive and execute the scheme.

For most of us, lacking such devious motivation and energy, we write and post fairly true to who we are.

What you see and hear from me on the board is me in person. I have no Jekyl and Hyde mentality or an alter ego.

Board personas are just that... board personas.... I, for one, have been told by a few how "bitchy", "snobby", "self righteous" I am here on eccie but my friends / people that know me and have met me in person would say otherwise..... Originally Posted by Naomi4u

I tend to be pretty candid regardless of where I am virtually or physically. Still, I always consider other people's perspectives too and definitely am not judgmental....what would be the point? I use logic and facts as a basis for my opinions and I try not to hurt anyone's feelings....unless they're just crazy. You can't argue with crazy.
I've always tried to be a straightforward person in and out of the board, but I tend to get the same response from those I meet:
"You are not at all what I expected. I expected an old, fat white dude, ha"

Then again, we all know that members talk about other members, so I would not be surprised if opinions of me are really way off the charts, lol.
