Do you ride it First Class, while you let your Wife ride in Coach?

Meh-- I've flown First Class a number of times on American... pretty easy with them, often times you can upgrade for just $50. The seats are nicer as is the service, but I would never pay "rack rate" for one of those seats-- I just take the upgrade whenever its available to me.

Poor trick didn't know any better, that should be the story and the shocker. Little things like first class is a big deal for Tia, let the girl share her excitement

I only fly 1st class for work. I'm not paying for that shit on my dime. I don't care that I can easily afford to do so. I never will. Flights over 5 or 6 hours are usually big planes that have movies to watch to kill time so I just act like I am in a crowded movie theater so coach is fine with me for my personal travels. I will pay extra in coach though to make sure that I have an aisle seat because I am tall and I like to stretch my legs out when I can.

I don't have FU money. I'm a working stiff trying to retire before I'm 50. To waste money on 1st class to be more comfortable for a few hours does not help me get to my retirement goal any faster.

However, what guarantee do you have that you will live till 50 or live for many years beyond 50? Or even if you live beyond 50, you might be in such poor health and in such constant body pain that you may be bed bound and wish you were dead. Lots of old people are miserable and wish they were dead. Not all of us will get to grow old first before we die. In fact, a significant percentage of us will die before we grow old. Then what? You can't take that retirement money with you after you're dead.

It's good to save steadily for your retirement and to save & invest money in general but it's also smart to splurge on yourself now from time to time. Not only because you're alive now but also because you're probably in relatively good health now and it's only down hill from here. In that context, it's not a bad idea to fly first class now and then even in your own dime.

^^^^There is no guarantee that I will live to be 50. Hell, there is no guarantee that I'll live until next week for that matter. I am certainly aware of that fact. I don't think splurging on 1st class makes any fiscal sense so I don't do it. I fly 1st class for work because I am usually working on the plane the entire flight and I need room to spread out but on personal travels, I'm not working so coach is fine. I could easily use my miles for upgrades and always fly 1st class but I prefer to give my miles away as gifts to friends and family... and to me, the people in coach are much more entertaining than the people in 1st class are to strike up a casual conversation with if I am in the mood for small talk.
