Every time I turn on the travel channel it’s about a haunted place that’s all they do now.I know Anthony Bourdain is dead, but I would like to see reruns every once in a while or his ghost. Originally Posted by Johnnytricks

I actually sent this in for the last Thriller Thursday on Alice 107.7 and will be interested to see if they decide to read it.

⚠️Trigger Warning: Mention of Suicide⚠️

I want to start out by saying that I have very special memories listening to Thriller Thursday with my dad every October when he would drive me to school in the mornings. I apologize for the length of my story, but I feel that it is important to share so that I can warn others of what you could be inviting into your home when you play with Ouija boards and ask spirits for favors.

When I was 2 years old, my parents and I moved into a brand new home in Maumelle. I had a good childhood and we were a happy, normal family until odd things started happening in our house. I remember when I was about 8 years old, my mom had gotten into the occult and had a Ouija board and tarot cards. Since I was a horror movie lover from an early age, this excited me and one day my mom asked me if I wanted to try it out with her. Being a kid and not knowing any better, I said yes. We sat on the floor with the board illuminated by candle light and put our hands on the planchette. After awhile of asking questions, nothing had happened and I quickly became bored with it. In the following years when I was around 12 or 13, my parents drifted apart. They didn't have any big blowout arguments, but there was obviously a different dynamic between them. One night I had a friend over for a slumber party and we stayed up late after my parents had gone to bed. We were out back jumping on the trampoline being silly when my friend stopped in her tracks and looked toward the back door. She asked me if my dad was up. I told her that he never really woke up in the middle of the night. "I saw him standing at the door. He was wearing a black robe." I figured he may have gotten up to check on us and I brushed it off. The next morning I asked him if he had gotten up and he was adamant that he had not been downstairs that night. From there on, things got worse. I remember seeing a candle holder on the coffee table with a completely flat bottom inexplicably turn over on it's side and my Nanny had such horrific experiences in the house that she did not want to spend the night when she visited. One night Nanny and I both heard the clock on the wall get so loud that it began to shake like it was going to come flying off the wall. She walked over and raised her hand, said "In the name of Jesus, I rebuke you, Satan" and it stopped almost instantly. There was another time she stayed over when my mom had her knee replacement. Nanny and I were sharing my room that night when she woke me up and said the lamp on my bedside table came on and looked like fire. She had never been told that it had a flicker bulb in it and when I checked it out, that light was not even plugged into the wall. We even had a painter refuse to come back and finish his job because he claimed he felt someone or something try to push him off his ladder.

Believe it or not, but things got worse. When I was around 15, my dad, who was an Air Force veteran of 20 years and was not one to make up stories or believe in the paranormal, claimed that he would wake up at night and see a figure in a dark hooded robe with no face standing by his side of the bed. It never said anything and would disappear after a few minutes. I had never told him about my friend seeing the same robed figure in the back door. Another time he said he was home alone in the living room and noticed that it got hot suddenly. He got up to turn the air on and saw the faceless, hooded figure menacingly peeking out at him from around the laundry room. Standing there frozen in fear, it disappeared and he felt a strong rush of cold air blow past him. After that his mental health began to deteriorate rapidly with depression and anger management issues, resulting in a couple of involuntary hospital stays. When I was 17, my mom and I came home one night from visiting a friend, only for us to find that he had committed suicide in the living room.

Several years later my mom confided in me that after an argument years ago, she had made contact with a spirit through her Ouija board and specifically asked it to torment him. I genuinely believe that if she had never done that, my dad would still be alive today. I am now 26 years old. Needless to say, she and I have somewhat of a strained relationship and I absolutely hate having to visit that house.
Wow Vannah, I am sorry to hear that, I had no idea.

One of my favorite places to visit is The Crescent Hotel. I absolutely love it there and it has become a great source of peace and inspiration for me. I can't help but find that ironic considering that it was the last stop for many cancer patients who trusted a con-artist to cure their cancer. Norman Baker never cured anyone and his painful injections contained things like ground up watermelon seeds and carbolic acid.

Not too long ago, the guy I have been seeing planned a surprise trip for us to spend a couple of nights in Michael's Room (218). Based on past experiences, that room has never disappointed.

At one point during the night, I woke up to find him sitting on the edge of the bed looking around. He seemed concerned about something, but I chose to mind my own business and went back to sleep. When I woke up again to start the day, he was still sitting on the edge of the bed. I asked him if he was ok and he said "If you want to experience something terrifying, go into that bathroom at night." He seemed like he didn't want to discuss it. I couldn't figure out what would freak him out so bad, considering that he looks like a big NFL linebacker that would never be scared of a ghost, as well as a serious skeptic.

We were at breakfast in the Crystal Dining Room when he finally told me what happened. He said that he got up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom. As soon as he closed the door to the bathroom, he said he could hear the doorknob rattling and thought it was me playing a joke. He asked "What are you doing?" only to hear a voice answer back that was not mine. He heard a male voice with what he thought was a British accent say "Oh, I'm sorry." He then heard heavy footsteps like someone was wearing work boots and quickly opened the door to the bathroom, only to see the door to the hotel room shut. He also saw me clearly snoozing away because I have been known to sleep through a tornado. He immediately went out into the hallway to see if anyone was out there and there was no sign of any guests or employees stirring about. He is one of the most logical people I have ever met and believes that there is a reasonable explanation for everything, so he began to investigate. He went down to the lobby and saw the night auditor at the front desk. He asked him if he had perhaps been doing a room check and did not realize that the most requested room in the hotel was currently occupied. The night auditor told him he had not been upstairs and that he was the only employee there at that hour, ruling out any possibility of housekeeping coming in. What makes things even more disturbing is knowing that I am very particular about safety and the door was double locked before we even went to bed, so the door had to have been opened from the inside.

For the rest of the trip, he refused to go back into that bathroom at night, and instead chose to utilize the facilities in the lobby. To this day, he says he has no desire to ever stay in that room again.

This is one of the many jars with body parts that were discovered by the hotel groundskeeper in early February, shortly after the Ghost Adventures crew did their episode there. I got to hold this on the VIP ghost tour and they believe it to be a part of a heart, liver or kidney. Super cool, right?

Michael in night vision.

There is a reason they call her "The Grand Old Lady Of The Ozarks."

Tools of the trade. (EMF meter, spirit box/EVP recorder, IR/night vision light to go with my full spectrum camera and a motion detector)

You really do tell a great story! Good imagery and I was imagining the whole story in my head as I was reading along. Hell, I’d totally pay you to just read ghost stories to a group of people 😉

I lived in Monticello for about 10 years. The Allen House was alright. Ghost hunters or one of those tv shows did an episode on it.
