I agree. I should have been in bed sleeping rather than trying to create a coherent argument—which I didn’t. I was erroneously equating Epicurus’ philosophy with ‘hedonism’, and they are not the same. Epicurus clearly wanted all to enjoy living life as it came without guilt and cruelty. Hedonism, as you pointed out, is not so constrained.
