First and most important....When you ask for an STD/STI test you have to ask the doctor for the herpes 1 and 2 test. They are NOT included in standard STD/STI testing. They are expensive!
Herpes is a very common infection. It is caused by two different but closely related viruses. The viruses are herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both are easy to catch. They remain in the body for life and can produce symptoms that come and go.
Both forms of herpes can infect the oral area, the genital area, or both. When the infection is on or near the mouth, it is called oral herpes. Oral herpes is caused most often by HSV-1. When a herpes infection is on or near the sex organs, it is called genital herpes. Genital herpes is caused most often by HSV-2. Up to 8 out of 10 American adults have oral herpes. And about 1 out of 4 American adults have genital herpes. Millions of people do not know they have herpes because they never had, or noticed, the herpes symptoms.

Herpes is spread by touching, kissing, and sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can be passed from one partner to another and from one part of the body to another. Brief skin-to-skin contact is all that's needed to pass the virus. From thigh to thigh is very common!!!! Because herpes may have no symptoms for years, sometimes it is very difficult to know who passed it to whom.
Although it is rare, genital herpes can also be spread from a pregnant woman to her baby during vaginal birth.
Herpes is most contagious when sores are open, moist, or leaking fluid — until the scabs heal and fall off. But herpes can also be spread when no symptoms are present — most people get genital herpes from people with no symptoms. And most people with oral herpes were infected as children.
The lining of the mouth, vagina, penis, anus, and eyes can become infected with herpes easily. Skin can be infected if it is cut,(rasor burn) chafed, or burned, or has a rash or Bite your lip, bleeding gums and other sores.

2. Kissing is a viable way to spread disease. This includes oral herpes (cold sores) and according to the google results, very rare cases of syphalis.

So, as with anything in life and the hobby, if you are unprepared for the risk, don't engage in the activity. You can do your own research with the internet search engines to see what (if any) STDs can be spread via kissing.

Actually HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) and Chickenpox (Herpes Varcialla) are two different viruses and impact the immune system differently.

Not trying to sound like a jerk but I do want to point this out. I speak from years of experience of volunteering on a Herpes forum as well as community information (before you think I have HSV I don't. Just done lots of research for an ex-girlfriend I had). The following is basic information that I feel should be shared with all and more so in our hobby. If you would like more information I am open to PM's and helping you the best way or pointing you in the best possible resources out there with HSV and some STD's.

HSV-1 is the most common form of HSV out there. Typically this is found in cold sores which we typically get in our childhood from that kiss from your cousin or auntie. Those that have HSV-1 are immune or what studies are showing HIGHLY immune to HSV-1 infections in other locations, this includes the genital location (anything that is in touched in the "boxer shorts" region is considered genital HSV). HSV-1 can be oral (commonly found), genital, and even impact the fingers (herpes withlow), or other parts of the body (I once knew of a guy who had it on his elbow) typically this is herpes gladiator.

HSV-2 can be oral and genital as well. Same thing applies with the locations. Though commonly it is found in the genital location. It is rare (about 5% of HSV-2 infections) are in the oral location.

Now before anyone get's worried I would like to offer some information on transmission and testing. There is two types of ways the virus can be transmitted. One is symptomatic and asymptomatic shedding. The shedding rates that we have are based on location of the infected area. For example HSV-1 doesn't have as many outbreaks in the genital location and shedding is also less in that area compared to HSV-2 genital and HSV-1 in the oral location. HSV-2 rarely sheds and reoccurs in the oral location compared to HSV-1.

Transmission can ONLY take place during periods of shedding or an active outbreak. If you have a cold sore your entire oral location is infectious and can lead to transmission. Avoid sexual contact (including kissing) during an outbreak (cold sore/fever blister). Wait until the skin has fully healed. During a genital outbreak your entire "boxer shorts" region (including the inside of your vagina or urethra men) does shed the virus during an outbreak. Again avoid sexual contact during an outbreak.

Let me bring up the shedding. Shedding is going to happen. You will not know when you are shedding (if you have the virus). If you have genital HSV you will not shed on the area that the skin is thick (like your legs) just the soft “pink” tissue as the skin is thin. We don’t know how long those sessions last. Could be minutes or hours and we don’t really know.

Condoms only provide about 30% protection against HSV. Now if you have a condom and get a blow job (or perform one) you will not get genital herpes (or oral HSV) from that contact. Transmission ONLY takes place with skin to skin contact. This means that if there is something between the skin and an infected area you have nothing to worry about. The way the virus is transmitted is via heat and friction. Something to note that a previous poster stated I feel needs to be changed. Fleeting contact does not always lead to infection. You need HEAT and FRICTION. The virus can't get through the layers of the skin on its own. It needs an opening. The heat caused by the skin rubbing provides the virus the heat to survive but the friction causes micro breaks in our skin. The virus will NOT transmit with blood. The virus is NOT blood bourne thus no risk from blood (such as bleeding gums though the opening can cause transmission). No, as an adult you will not get it from sharing food or drinks. Oral sex is a LOW RISK activity (think of the heat and friction in that it is different than genital sex).

Testing: The old school way of testing for herpes was a IgM test. This is outdated and though it is still run by major labs. For adults we do NOT recommend you get an IgM test. Various reasons including they can cross react with other viruses (I can elaborate more on this later) and also the chemistry of the test can provide some false positive issues also there is a false negative side of things as well. IgM is worthless test for HSV. If you are getting tested with that SLAP your medical provider around with a 2010 CDC Guidelines. ONLY TEST for HSV using a type specific IgG test. These are the ONLY accurate tests we have for blood work. An important note is on the testing we currently have for HSV-1 is not as good as HSV-2. No blood work will show you the site of infection. You may never recall a cold sore in your life but you may test positive. Testing is only accurate up to 12 weeks after your last sexual encounter. Ensure that your testing is done by a trained professional. HSV-2 does have a range that can be about 50% false positive.

If you feel you have a sore and are worried about HSV be seen within 48hrs for a swab test. Request that the sore be swabbed and sent for either a culture with typing or PCR testing. Also have lab work done that same day you are seen. This will help (though not perfect) if this is a recent infection or not. Most county clinics will do a swab test. There are some symptoms with HSV but in a survey majority of people who were tested for HSV-2 and where positive never knew they had it. Once they were told the symptoms of HSV they could recall it.

You will be amazed at how many providers don’t know about the testing properly for HSV. I have had to school a few doctors even on proper testing and interpreting results (sad if you ask me).

Herpes Simplex one and two..not the same thing, but yes you can get a cold sore from kissing another who has one.

Herpes and Chicken Pox are not the same virus. They both affect carriers and travel via different methods...getting Shingles later in life, is true however if you have never had CP as a child. Not to say you WILL get it, but are in fact more prone.

With Herpes, there don't have to be symptoms to spread it...sorry guys, you can't "inspect" that. So many women feel a guy is safe just because they can't "see" anything wrong down there...so not the case.
