In my experience as a father, parents only exert a strong influence over our children until about the age of 13 or 14, mainly because they depend on us for their survival. After they figure out they don't have to depend on us for their survival, they are subject to doing things on their own that we don't always support or agree with.

Parenting is a very selfless, life consuming decision. Understand this a reason why some non-parents hold off on having kids.
The real question is: did those who said they would have done the same, really read the article before commenting?
If one is so quick to kill someone without thinking of the consequences, maybe one isn't the best example of a parent. That person might have a daughter who runs to a pimp. Especially in the bay area where for the most part, there are 3 kinds of people; hookers, pimps, and johns.
Why would you guys want to put yourselves in that category, and say you would have killed the man too?
I swear the herd mentality isn't going anywhere so....... well, I'm not elitist or cruel enough to say the rest.
People are more likely to understand your actions/decision if you say why you might act/feel a curtain way.
Otherwise, the people siding with the dumb father might seem like-minded.
