What I do get is that he is a REP-DEM-IND. In other words, the party lable is kind of meaningless. But there are too many here--and in the bigger society--who still vote straight party line no matter who is running, what their credentials are, or what they stand for. I personally believe abolishing all political parties and only allowing PEOPLE to run would have some very significant benefits.
