Just tell the truth without giving away too much personal info. Not getting good vibes, go ahead and say it. Your dog died, just say you had a death in family (after all, dogs can become part of the family). Double booked, move the appt to a different time. The B.S. does pile up high and deep, and somehow it has to get shoveled out.
When I turn away a client because I don't want to see him I will politely tell him I don't want to. When I have to turn someone down or that I want to see of cannot be available at the time he requests I'm not so sure what to say. I think some gents feel like if I am unavailable then I must be with another client. If I have to tend to personal business and will be available in 2-3 hrs it often eliminates business for several more hours and it sucks turns out to be a slow day.
I really don't like for a gent to message me and say hey when are you available, I never know if I'm going to set myself up for failure. I like it better if the request a time and I respond if I can or not.

I've never felt a lady owed me any explanation at all. If I call for an appointment and she's not available, the reason doesn't really matter. Most of the time that's happened to me the lady suggested an alternate day/time, and that's always appreciated, but I understand that sometimes they can't even do that. If she wants to tell me, okay, but if she doesn't, that's okay too. Life happens to people.
