Yu Darvish and near perfection....

I thought my 9 year old was going to bust out into tears when it ended. I was close myself. After those two quick outs, I thought it was absolutely going to happen.

On your other post about pulling him out, I was having an interesting conversation with my 17-year old about that. He just had Tommy John surgery and is out until next spring, so we had a little different context to discuss it in. In the end, though, we both agreed with leaving him in. You just can't pull a guy with that kind of opportunity at his fingertips...pardon the pun.

i'm surprised they didn't let him get that last out, even with 111 pitches thrown the CG shutout would have been his first in the majors. (i don't know how many he had in Japan though)

Hard to argue. I think Wash had him on a pitch count that he was way over at that point. Got him out of there as soon as he could. I'll bet Wash's "sphincter factor" was high as the game wore on and he saw his ace stacking up pitches in his first start. I'm sure he was excited about the perfect game, but prolly could see Yu walking off with a rag arm in the back of his brain.

I see no way to pull him when he is pitching a perfect game, but if he doesn't have good stuff next game, that could be the price he paid for all those pitches.

It is hard to decide which is the worst.

Mike Mussina lost TWO perfect games - one with ONE out in the 9th and a second with TWO outs in the 9th.

Hal Haddix threw TWELVE (12) innings of perfection before LOSING in the bottom of the 13th.

But, I think Dave Stieb had it the worst. Between 1985 and 1988, Stieb lost 3 no-hitters in the 9th, including two consecutive games in which he had 2 outs in the 9th and 2 strikes on the 27th batter. Then, in 1989, Stieb got 26 consecutive Yankees out. But with two out in the 9th, he blew the perfect game to Roberto Kelly and then lost the shutout to Steve Sax.

They did look silly. Admittedly, Houston has a weak line-up, but they were completely clueless about where the ball was going to end up. How many of those pitches that were swung at ended up in the dirt?

Didn't work out, but it was a masterpiece, I just wish it would have happened here in Dallas. The Ballpark would've been a little bit noisy in the 9th.

Opening day tomorrow for Rangers home games, I'll be there. Can't wait.

I can still visualize Rusty Greer's diving catch in the 9th to save Rodger's perfect game...wow.

LA Angels Hudler hit a slicing liner to right-center which rookie center fielder Rusty Greer snagged in a full dive. On the crack of the bat, the ball park went dead silent, all heads following the ball; then total eruption when Greer came up good !
