NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico -- A trio of gun battles in Nuevo Laredo has left 12 people dead and 21 wounded, including several children. According to sources, one of the gun battles Friday lasted nearly two hours. The gunmen, believed to be drug traffickers, fired several rounds into a bus carrying children.The gunmen also carjacked several vehicles and crashed one of them intentionally in an effort to block streets and keep the Mexican Army from catching up to them.Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said that United States citizens thinking of visiting the border community should think twice before paying a visit."If you must go to Nuevo Laredo or Mexico, then it should be an emergency, something where you absolutely need to go," Cuellar said.The sheriff added that if you must go to Nuevo Laredo, travel early and return before sundown."At night time is when they start coming out," Cuellar said of the drug traffickers. "That's when it could get dangerous."The gun battles were considered to be the most violent in months.
