I always like to share the story of a high school football player way back before digitial recording. During the scrimage he had the football literally fall into his hands, he looked at it before comprehending (democrat right?), and started to run. He ran like the wind nearly the length of the field. No defender got near him or even tried. The last few steps he slowed and did the drum major strut into the endzone. He was mighty pleased with himself and wanted to spike the ball....but the ball was sitting on the ground near where he got it. He dropped the ball shortly after he started running and the play was over.

I wouldn't classified it as particularly criminal, but he could face civil repercussions from the network. He's slipped about three different times while on the air.

It's called getting fired. He would suffer nothing more than that. The station/network would be at risk from the FCC, if it's a broadcast station and if if violated FCC regs. If non-broadcast, the he could pretty much get away with anything.
