Art Museums in Austin

Yes, the Blanton is the best in town. Check out their latest exhibit on super realistic paintings and sculptures. AMOA-Arthouse is really cool too, they show contemporary art downtown and more traditional art at Laguna Gloria. Mexic-Arte Museum is a Latino museum with a lot of cool cultural pieces. There are several small independent galleries on the east side, most notable are CoLab, pump project, mass gallery, and tiny park. You can find the best art show listings in the Chronicle or a website called Glasstire. I'm involved with many of these. Hit me up and I'll give you a tour!
Blanton!
grayduck Gallery 608 W. Monroe. Small south austin studio, that often features local talent. A very nice young woman named Jill owns the place and she will discuss the exhibits, give you background, etc. Small but fun.
They had an exhibit last summer of sexy women whose lipstick looked like dripping blood. It was both morbid and hot at the same time. Very erotic Originally Posted by chuckles

I know there used to be one in DTown Georgetown but that was centuries ago.

Anyone?
OOPs, guess I could have read the thread.......;P
This one is outside Austin, near Johnson City about an hour W of Austin, but Sculpture Ranch is well worth the drive. There are 40+ acres of huge sculptures - the smallest is 10 ft - that will end up on billionaires' private islands someday. Admission is free, unlike the billionaires' islands. You can drive through the grounds in 30 minutes, or stop and picnic and spend a few hours. Makes a heckuva good half-day road trip. Nowhere else on earth.

Spyder House north of UT campus has a hippie/arts/performance garage sale thing every Sunday afternoon, and a lotta lotta art events happen there throughout the week. Strange Brew on Manchaca has occasional artist openings (I showed photos there), as well as other coffee houses like Flightpath and Hyde Park Cafe (both in Hyde Park.)

We're approaching festival season (yes, for you newcomers, there are even more Austin festivals when it cools down a bit), so you'll have too many shows to visit, leading up to Christmas. Too many.
