and i thought shennanigans was only a place from that movie "waiting"...guess i shouldn't go in there, I'm not really a fan of slumming it lol, but I'll definitely check out some of the other places.
Yes, LaLa's Lounge and Coctails is something you MUST see. I met Quentin Tarentino and his "enourage" there one night after a premier of some sort. So what. I still like the bar! :P

Had not heard of Bagpipes and will have to check it out on my next visit to the ATX. Any others not on the list?
Roaring fork gets my vote for best waldorf salad in austin...I used to stop by every day after my non-hobby job even though it was crowded as hell at the time I got off. Substitute bacon instead of the avocodo and it's seriously my second favorite salad ever.

Cool River is definitely pretentious.

Just gotta chime in with some South Austin dive bars. Not that their awesome places to hang out, but I've always wanted to lead a South Austin dive bar tour for my friends. If I were to do that, I'd start at Freddys (not a dive bar) at dusk. Freddy's is actually chill, dog and child friendly with quite a bit of outdoor seating. It's a very cool place to hang out in late spring and early fall. G&S Lounge(sorta surreal just south of Oltorf on S 1st), Ego's (cheap, strong drinks, actually goes for the dive bar aesthetic, just south of riverside inside an apartment complexes parking area), Trophy's (kinda like the continental clubs, cheap, sleazy, older looking, but younger brother; just north of oltorf on Congress)
there's several places up northern Austin way away from the 6th street areas...
Sherlock's on Burnet and 183 (with Bagpipes across the street from it), the Draught House on 42nd and Medical Parkway, The Flying Saucer in the Triangle at Lamar & Guadalupe. My two favorites right now are Mister Tramps on 183 and Fairfield (good prices and plenty of special activities) and myplace on Jester drive off of 2222 (good food and good trio of guys playing Wednesdays/Thursdays).
