La Quinta has also mailed me something too, but to avoid this just tell them you have a different mailing address than shown on ID. I always pay cash and it is a north location so its also decent

The card is accepted anywhere AMEX is, just like a CC.
You refill it with cash, gift cards or money transfers.
Everything is done online.
You can stop at the ATM to withdraw funds when you need cash.
Just stop at any walmart and use the ATM there to refill your account with gift cards or withdraw cash. Go to the customer service counter give them the cash and they will add it to your account.
You can also transfer paypal or most other similar e-payment accounts into it.

I just heard yesterday that AMEX and Office Depot partnered with a new prepaid debit card. I don't know much more but it sounded like they addressed some of the complaints related to previous versions.
