Soon, it will be time for the hummingbirds. The wild jewel weeds are a great draw for bumblebees and hummers, both. Are any of you interested in butterfly and hummer flowers?

Agastaches are fun to plant, but not all are reliably hardy. Mint hyssop is, A. foeniculum, and cheap to buy. A great favorite to many beings, including goldfinches. Other Agastache are magnets for butterflies, as are milkweeds which are cheap and hardy. Tickweed or coreopsis is hardy and beautiful and fun to grow in the broned and variegated colors. And of course, Lobelia cardinalis, its crimson a magnet for hummers. But it is not cheap unless you find some in plant sales. But hummers drink from all sorts of flowers and eat lots of insects in the bargain.

It is fun to plant some unusual but great tasting fruit trees. Cornell-Geneva has more than 2500 varieties of apples and 1500 varieties of cold-climate grapes plus many, many other fruit. I shall be delighted to recommend some of the less-common apple, pear, plum, and other fruit that will do extremely well in USDA Zones 5-3, and bring a lifetime of great fun and joy besides. Even a raspberry bush or two, a red currant, a thornless blackberry, all can lead to a lot of fulfillment. Apple trees can be as small as 5 feet tall, and as thin as a single branch and yet yield very heavily.

Have fun with gardening!

Fragrant ones are mine. Peonies can be incredibly fragrant and many of the older sorts are still around. Long-lived too. Many lilies and daffodils, although the former get eaten by deer and squirrels! Even the different columbines I have are becoming a target for deer, but the many different colors, deep midnight blue, yellow, etc. are really wonderful. Bluestone Perennials is a good source. Come to Ithaca for a visit and I shall take you around the Cornell Arboretum and Wildflower collections, if you would like that.

Monkshood, Aconitum michaelii, blooms very late in autumn, and is a wonderful pest-proof deep blue perennial that you might love to grow. Lots of beautiful hardy cyclamens here that carpet the ground come November.

What vegetables are your favorites to plant?

Last year, I had fun planting different types of Fingerling potatoes: La Ratte, Peanut, Peruvian Purple. Nice to grow something I have never seen nor tasted before and easy to grow; critters seemed to LOVE the taste too, and burrowed their way in from afar! They leave the ordinary potatoes alone, so that was a surprise.

Flat Italian romano type beans were another winner, easy to grow and really, really tasty, even just steamed and dressed with any vinaigrette. I have seeds to share, if you would like.

I had plans to see her yesterday. Set for noon. On the way there she changes to 1. I am very patient because I know this is her style. I wait outside her hotel til 115 and text her she says 3. Ridiculous. She has earned her rep for run a round. Never starts on time and in my case did not start. Probably had a better offer. Originally Posted by Johnny4455

Last season, for the first time, I raised Snow Peas to much success. Easy to grow, as are most of what I believe to be a genus of the bean family. They were delicious incorporated in most any stir-fry dish.
