I don't think anyone has a problem with the recreational user going to a gun range, renting the weapon of their choice and firing to their heart's content. No one's mentioned the real problem with high capacity shooting machines, that's what we call them "round here, is that gansta's don't give a fuck and they ain't great shots. They don't care if innocent bystanders get hit and they need high capacity to overcome their skill limitations. Thugs don't take their illegal guns to the range to practice. I understand the frustrations of the responsible gun owners who would like to own some of these high capacity weapons. I think the public benefit of restricting these weapons out weighs the concerns of the responsible hobbiest. Close to 9,000 murder by gunfire last year in the US. 3X the number killed in 9-11, probably close to 100,000 murdered since 9-11. Look at we all gave up because of that. I guess because they didn't all happen at once it's not as bad. Our murder rate is way higher than other industrialized countries with stricter gun control. To me the arguement that gun owners need these high capacity weapons to protect themselves from a tyrannical government are laughable. The government can't control what goes on in the innercities, can't control the border, or even the activities on this board. What country has tried to attack the US and how did groups of armed regular citizens stop the invasion. I believe the last country to invade was britian in1812, but am unsure of the roll of militias in that war. Please enlighten us.

So at the close of the day we ALL see that there are vastly differing opinions on guns, gun control, and gun violence!

As a gun owner, hunter, and as someone who spends time at ranges to hone my skills I take gun safety and the safety of those around me very VERY seriously!

We have a responsibility to be aware of those around us and just an FYI I'm generally uncomfortable with teachers packing! But then again I'd be open to any and all suggestions that would protect students and faculty alike!

One FINAL point. This Thread has gotten very negative and the personal pot shots and name calling were uncalled for ... by anyone! This has to stop and if it were to continue then appropriate action will have to be taken!

I am not referring to foreign invasion but rather how our relative peace and prosperity has taught many to forget that governments can be corrupt and abusive. The government has forgotten to fear the people. I fear those who would disarm us have too much faith in a system that was not based on trust but rather on checks and balances.

Re banning guns vs. high capacity guns: for one, I want the same arms for the people as the cops/army, that only makes sense with my other rationale. Also, like anything else, if you want to protect your rights, you have to dig your heels in. If you let them take your big gun today, they'll eventually be coming for the small one.
