his mistake was that he thought he might have a shot at the democratic nomination for president.

what he failed to realize was that conservative democrats are extinct, and moderate democrats are on life support. He had very little support within the democratic rank & file.

He never had a chance in the debates and in the primary.

He would have done better to run as a Republican. His military credentials are a plus in a run like that.
