Bartering

It doesn't bother me that some ladies feel comfortable bartering. I feel it should be up to the lady to make that suggestion, and if he's interested, what happens is between the two of them.

I am highly offended by photographers who approach me hoping I'll barter.

I'm more then happy to pay a professional for their work, and will only deal with photographers that treat their work like a business, not a way to get laid cheap. If a photographer initiates the bartering conversation, he's guaranteed to be turned down and loose the possibility of having me as a paying client.

It reminds me of porn directors who tell new girls they want to audition them in private before putting them on set Originally Posted by Lauren Summerhill

Lauren, I understand your position and no, typically I don't offer a trade. It is almost always the provider who asks if I will trade for services and that is usually because she can't afford to lay out the cash. You are obviously very successful at what you do and have handled your finances prudently. Not all providers are as well positioned as you. Originally Posted by Pearl Man

I could very well be wrong in my opinion on this as it's based on personal reaction - I think offering to barter with a lady who can't afford her pictures is taking advantage of her state of poverty. If it is really in the interest of helping her, not getting another notch on the photographer's belt, he can do the pictures on a small deposit and wait until she's had a head start and can pay the balance of his regular fees. If he doesn't trust she'll pay, well then it really isn't any interest in helping "her". It's a broad way to justify seeing the ladies the photographer wants without having to pay anything.

I only mentioned the condition where ladies make the offer because I know other women are comfortable with it.
Thats a pretty good offer! Originally Posted by pjorourke

No I don't. I pay anytime I contact a professional for their services and expect to be paid for anything I offer on a professional basis as well. So where's the double standard?

Frankly, I am lost as well at what you're getting at. Originally Posted by discreetgent

Her response was:

You're assuming I offer bartering.
This is after she started the whole back and forth by posting:

Which I take to mean it is ok for someone in her profession to approach someone in another profession about barter, but the reverse is "highly offensive." Lauren, what have I missed?

I think it is fair to say that Lauren doesn't barter because she doesn't have to. If I am offering a photo shoot for $200 to $300 and a provider offers me a $200 to $300 session in exchange for it because she needs to hang on to her $200 to $300 cash so she can pay the rent this month, I don't see a problem with it and I can accept the offer or not. The problems arise when the hobbyist is not offering something of equal value or the provider fails to live up to her end. That's the risk.

I think it should be up to the lady to ask only because women like myself find being approached for bartered services highly offensive. As the photographer, by initiating the conversation they risk loosing a client who would pay market value for their services and stop any chance of word of mouth recommendations.

Now if they don't depend on the photography world for income or erotic nudes are not the core business, it probably doesn't matter if you're harming potential income. It would be really nice though, if I could communicate to photographers to stop sending such offers. Alas, they surf the net looking for women they want to bed and don't really read the websites of the women they contact.
