Depending on where you are, go to I-37 and go south, past US90, past Loop 410 and about the time you get to the 1604/I-37 interchange, there is an off ramp to 181 South to Floresville. Very easy and not that far.

I had the CFS at Antler about six yrs ago and eh. Not bad but not the best.

The Antler has changed locations since then, it is no longer at US281N and TX46.

It is on TX46 east from US281N (meaning take a right) and travel about 1.5 - 2 miles. It will be on your left. I have not tried the food since they have moved.

I normally do not rate a CFS by its size on the plate, the damn steak is tenderized to the point of being 2mm thick with gaps in it covered by batter. Useless. This is the case with Rooty's on 410 yrs ago.

A CFS should be 1/4 thick after tenderizing, and in my opinion, using the same type of batter created at Mr & Mrs G's for their fried chicken. Which, BTW is the absolute best around chicken in Texas.

The milk gravy used at Radickes is very good. The CFS is better than most.

Chasing the elusive Best Chicken Fried Steak Ever is a pipe dream for me.

In my youth I was spoiled by growing up in Corpus Christi and going to Floyd's Restaurant, where my mother was the waitress and my aunt was the cook. For me, every meal was home cooked, and the CFS was the best in the world. Originally Posted by Doglegg

As a 30 year owner/operator of several very successful restaurants,I must say that I have earned my belly and I am a true foodie. There are not any really good chicken fried steaks here in San Antonio sad to say...Tip Top back 15-20 years ago when Buddy was alive and running it and the gravy was made from scatch was very good..as was the Milam Drugstore and Diner which closed down a few years back. The best I ever had was in Giddings,Tx at Schubers diner..fork tender and gravy to die for. Happy hunting but I am afraid that your search locally will only provide you with mediocre results with packaged Pioneer gravy if you are lucky..Morrisions or some other cream gravy if you are not...

Wow its amazing that even on a hooker board 200 miles away and 30 years later that Floyd's still comes up in conversation.
That is the sign of good food.

Josephine St. Does put out a damn good CFS.

You can get a pretty decent CFS at Little Red Barn.

I am not going out on a limb and say its better than here or there, but if you can lower your quest for the Best or Greatest to a quest for a good CFS, it would be hard pressed to complain about Little Red Barn.

First of all the steak is not over-breaded, it is of a good size, your choice of fries and a veggie (canned greenbeans) and your standard milk gravy. Green salad is standard with every meal.

Waitresses are of median age and wear cowgirl outfits.

The last four or five chicken fried steaks that I have had, have all been at the Little Red Barn.

Again, it does not rate as the best or the greatest, but it is good and leaves the stomach full and taste buds mollified.

Novatx try Antler Inn. From my dining experiences, it's worth the drive there.
