Veterans Day: Discounts and Freebies

Needed to do a little home repairs. Headed off to Lowe's and Home Depot for parts. Both stores were sporting Veterans Day sales. Lowe's said all this week Vets will get a 10% discount off all purchases. Home Depot was better and said Vets get 10% off all year long! Home Depot service desk personnel said they appreciate and take US Veteran military service very seriously and that is why their discount lasts for the entire year, not just around Veterans Day. Just need to show your Vets card or proof of service.
The horror. The horror. Originally Posted by Bushman69

Going into a place and expecting free shit, I can't do it. The whole thing just reeks of combined hands out on the one hand and forced charity on the other. Especially when it comes to sitting down and eating -- the free meal thing, ugh -- embarrassing is the most appropriate word I can think of....

I tried the American Legion and VFW thing, I just can't get into the scene. Originally Posted by watercooled82

He offered to go with me and get the discount, but I didn't want to play that way. When I was in retail, I would have matched the discount if politely asked. I gave Lowe's that option and they accepted the return. It was not an item I really needed I am glad I don't have today.

Serious question I do not know:

"They offer an all day, every day 10 percent discount to all military personnel who are active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members, with a valid, government-issued military ID card.

All other military veterans will receive the discount on the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day weekends."

What are the 'other' vets not included in active, reserve, retired, or disabled?

vets that got drafted did their two years and got out
volunteers that decided they didn't want to do 20 years
others being forced out due to down sizing
Google Thank-a-Vet Erie County... then click on participating business and you'll come across a website administered by the Erie County Clerk that offers many discounts all year long.

Right now it has over 1,000 local businesses fully supporting it! .....

As opposed to a handful of "nattering nabobs of negativism" we find here, spouting nothing but negative waves sounding more and more like Moriarty below.....

JC ....always with the negative waves....why don't YOU say something righteous and hopeful for a change???.......

were all just trying to enjoy our little time on this planet somrtimes it would be nice if the assholes could take a day off so decent folks could enjoy the nice things in life.

happy holiday to all those who ever served and thank you for your contributions
It's not about the handouts free shit or whatever. It's about showing the respect to those who came before us. There have been many years I have completely forgotten about any free meals, and been some where I go to hang out with fellow vets, both young and old. It's a chance to go and listen to their stories and us to tell them. Yes, we can do that at places like the vfw or legion just as well, and do so. But whenever this federal holiday comes around all the naysayers get to put their two cents in the mix and blast people for getting "hand outs" well it's because of those ladies and gentleman getting those "hand outs" that you are able to do so.

what I find disconcerting is most government workers ,vets or not, get the day off with pay
while most vets have to go to work
