It's all personal preference man once you get right down to it. Do you like the sweet caramel and butcherscotchy goodness of ex-bourbon American oak cask or the spicy dark fruit flavors of ex-sherry European oak casks? Peated or unpeated?
I prefer primarily ex-bourbon or fresh american oak cask aged Scotch, unpeated or only lightly peated. If sherry casks are used I prefer them as a finishing element not the primary. The Balvenie Doublewood is an excellent entree into that. I'm a Balvenie fan in general myself, I highly recommend their 15 year single barrel (the ex-bourbon one not the sherry one). Glenmorangie Signet is also excellent. I have a ton of favorites actually man I've probably got at least 15 bottles of various expressions in my liquor cabinet that rotate in and out as I finish one off and replace it with something else.
Glenmorangie 10 year is the best of the commonly carried single malts found at bars and restaurants imop.
To your Rye question yeah I've tried quite a few different Ryes but I'm not an enormous fan of the peppery spiciness of it myself though I do enjoy a ryed bourbon from time to time on the rocks. It's not a rye whiskey but I recently tried Jefferson's small batch bourbon called Ocean:Aged at Sea and it was fantastic.
