Go with standard .308. 800 yrds effective range. My 9 yr old shoots one.

When I was nine a .308 would have knocked me over. I'm not suggesting that a nine year old should shoot anything so versatile as to take down an elk, but if he can do it more power to him [to use a '70s phrase].
Nor am I suggesting that the .270s and .300s that I prefer don't have drops at long ranges - but their drops are predictable and manageable so the longer shots can be made whereas more popular rounds like the 30-06 [and the .308 IMHO] are unmanageable at distances over 400 yards.
