Jews were exiled from Israel 70 C.E. by the Romans and after 130 C.E or so always had a presence in modern-day Israel, at times smaller, at times (kabbalists in Safed) larger. Muslims captured much of it in the 9th and 10th century; multiple crusades in the 11th and 12th centuries (maybe 13th even) which was a Christian-Muslim fight although occasionally Christian armies detoured on the way and had pogroms against Jewish communities in France and Germany (most notably in 1090).

Jews started migrating in larger numbers at the very start of the 19th century with more significant migrations in the late 19th and early 20th century. The MAJOR conflicts are very much a modern day fight and started to become very bitter after WWI when the British took over from the Ottomans.
