How have you deal with sleepless nights?

Alteril.

Natural, herbal and not addictive. The only side effect is that I wake up with a woody due to a lot of sexual dreams, that I remember in the morning.

I have an overactive thyroid so I have lots of sleepless nights. Add that to earlier having no female in my life problems then having a female with her own problems problems, then back to no female problems and some family problems on top of that (the sad kind, not the dysfunctional family kind) I normally just drink Jack and/or Jager until I pass out. It helps not having to be into work until 11:15 each morning.

No one's mentioned brainwave entrainment. Sounds freaky I know, but it's about lowering the frequency of brainwaves. All you need is a set of headphones to try it. Go to youtube and search on Delta(lowest frequency, sleep state,) waves, or delta entrainment. You may have to try several to hit on one that works for you, but there are tons of them on there. I would also mention theta waves(a bit higher frequencies) are great for meditation/relaxation and just ambient background.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainwave_entrainment

and jump to section 2.1 of that article.

It (binaural beats) works for a lot of people, especially for relaxation purposes, although many scientists feel it is mostly a placebo. However, I tend to disagree. It did wonders for my grandmother when she was suffering from Alzheimer's and she couldn't sleep without being heavily medicated. We used binaural beats at the suggestion of hospice and the results were amazing. I've used it since myself, but with mixed results. I still much prefer (multiple) Ambien.
