Prostitution legal in Canada?

I was always under the impression that in Canada, at least in Vancouver BC, streetwalking was definitely frowned upon but all other venues of escorting were tolerated and decriminalized. I remember when I visited there and my parents got this tourist map, on the other side of the map were ads for escorts. I know my dad was smiling from ear to ear, alas, I was only 19, and such an innocent thing, I thought an escort was someone who 'showed you around town'.
